Method

  1. 1.Combine rye, sweet vermouth, and bitters in a large container.
  2. 2.Add water for dilution — replaces the ~20% dilution from stirring over ice.
  3. 3.Stir well, bottle, and refrigerate.
  4. 4.Serve poured directly into a chilled coupe. Garnish with a cherry.

Notes

  • Water is required for pre-batching — skipping it makes the drink taste too spirit-forward and hot.
  • If stirring to order instead, omit the water and stir each serving with ice for 25-30 seconds.
  • Keeps 4-6 weeks refrigerated. The vermouth is the limiting factor for shelf life.
