Mulled Wine

Hot · Served hot in a Mug

A European tradition dating back to at least the 2nd century. Called Glühwein in Germany, vin chaud in France.

Ingredients

Method

  1. 1.Combine wine, orange slices, cinnamon, cloves, star anise, and sugar in a saucepan.
  2. 2.Heat over low-medium heat until steaming — do not let it boil or you'll burn off the alcohol and make it bitter.
  3. 3.Reduce heat to the lowest setting and let steep for at least 20 minutes.
  4. 4.Add brandy, stir, and remove from heat.
  5. 5.Strain into mugs or serve directly with the spices.

Notes

  • Never boil — keep the temperature below 170°F. A simmer will ruin the wine.
  • Use a decent but inexpensive red — Merlot, Cabernet, or Tempranillo all work well.
  • This makes about 4-5 servings.
