Mulled Wine
Hot · Served hot in a Mug
A European tradition dating back to at least the 2nd century. Called Glühwein in Germany, vin chaud in France.
Ingredients
- Red Wine (dry750 ml
- Brandy2 oz
- Orange1 each
- Cinnamon Sticks2 each
- Whole Cloves6 each
- Star Anise2 each
- Sugar2 tbsp
Method
- 1.Combine wine, orange slices, cinnamon, cloves, star anise, and sugar in a saucepan.
- 2.Heat over low-medium heat until steaming — do not let it boil or you'll burn off the alcohol and make it bitter.
- 3.Reduce heat to the lowest setting and let steep for at least 20 minutes.
- 4.Add brandy, stir, and remove from heat.
- 5.Strain into mugs or serve directly with the spices.
Notes
- Never boil — keep the temperature below 170°F. A simmer will ruin the wine.
- Use a decent but inexpensive red — Merlot, Cabernet, or Tempranillo all work well.
- This makes about 4-5 servings.
