Navy Grog

Classic Cocktails · Served rocks in a Double rocks glass

Created by Don the Beachcomber (Ernest Gantt) — one of his most famous tiki creations, riffing on the Royal Navy tradition of grog.

Ingredients

Method

  1. 1.Combine all rums, juices, honey syrup, and allspice dram in a shaker with ice.
  2. 2.Shake hard for 12 seconds.
  3. 3.Strain into a double old-fashioned glass over crushed ice.
  4. 4.Top with soda water.
  5. 5.Garnish with a spent lime shell filled with crushed ice (the 'ice cone').

Notes

  • The three-rum blend is essential: Jamaican for funk, Demerara for richness, white for brightness.
  • Don the Beachcomber's original 'ice cone' garnish was a lime half filled with crushed ice, placed in the center of the drink.
